Location:

The setting of this outstanding Bed & Birding place is truly breathtaking. Remote is an understatement when it comes to Papua New Guinea, a raw and remarkably untamed land where tribal traditions have changed little in centuries. Ambua Lodge is set right in the PNG highlands and close by there is a nice waterfall. Fly by charter aircraft to Tari over Papua New Guinea’s rugged Central Ranges, a spectacular region of limestone peaks that seem to rise and drop at impossible angles. Then transfer to Ambua Lodge, an award-winning eco-lodge nearly 7,000 feet above the beautiful Tari Valley. The valley is home to one of the most recognisable tribes in Papua New Guinea, the Huli Wigmen, known for their ceremonial costumes and rituals associated with the exotic birds of paradise. 13 species of them live around the Ambua lodge, including the stunning King of Saxony Bird-of-paradise.

Services:

See the elaborate plumage of the birds of paradise, the human-hair wigs of the Huli Wigmen, the highest mountains between the Andes and Himalayas and incredible swathes of virgin rainforest. Best of all, you’ll get to do it all in comfort, safety and style. You may be surprised at just how easy an adventure can be. Ambua is surrounded by a mass of interlocking treetops, emboldened by occasional splashes of colour from high-altitude orchids and rhododendrons. Well-kept nature trails venture into the jungle, crossing woven vine bridges and clear mountain streams to secluded waterfalls. There are no large animals in PNG. Tree Kangaroos and Possums are the largest of the marsupials (pouched mammals). As it is beyond the Wallace Line, there are no African or Asian animals. This means that the birds have a special place in nature here. Food is great and Staffs are all helpful, friendly & attentive.

Guestrooms:

Ambua Lodge consists of 35 comfortable round houses (rondels) built from natural materials in the lodge’s landscaped gardens. Each Rondel is consisting of clean & cosy twin or double room with ensuite bathroom, nice shower with adequate amenities and 3 bungalows that accommodate triple beds. All beds have electric blankets so you can have a cosy warm bed on a cold night. All rondels have wonderful 180 degree view of the garden & magnificent mountain range. In addition, there are 18 new rooms built in 2013 in a 2 storey block. These also have ensuite bathrooms with shower and a balcony. The new rooms are all twin/double with King size beds. The Main Lodge has a lounge, dining room and bar.
