Location:

Lake Murray Ecoodge is accessible from either Mount Hagen or Ambua Lodge on Mondays, and Fridays. Brisbane is usually the best departure city from Australia for the Lake Murray trips. Trans Niugini Tours has a special STOLA airfare (Short Take Off and Landing Aircraft) for these flights. Lake Murray is the largest lake in Papua New Guinea. During the wet season it spreads to occupy an area of about 2000 square kilometers. It has a population of about 5,000 people scattered in small villages, both on tiny islands and coastal areas of the lake. Island communities of stilted houses dot the water landscape of the lake. Dugout canoes are the primary mode of transportation and fishing is a major source of food to the local population. In keeping with our eco-friendly philosophy, the entire lodge operation is powered with the latest technology in solar power. This provides 24 hour electricity with 240 volt power, a luxury in this remote location.

Services:

A school and small hospital make this the population centre of the surrounding area. An airstrip on the Station also provides air access to the area for small aircraft. Lake Murray Ecolodge arranges excursions around the lake in 8-seat river boats to visit top birding locations, local villages and fishing spots. Western province is home to over 50% of New Guineas total bird population. Lake Murray is one of the best bird watching areas in the Province. In addition to a host of migratory birds, several birds of paradise species, pelicans, hornbills, eagles, parrots and numerous other rarities have been sighted. Lake Murray is also known for its Black Bass, Barramundi and Saratoga fish. The kitchen staff cooks on a wood fired cookstove and outdoor grill for the daily catch and garden selections. A large garden provides fresh vegetables and fruit on site.

Guestrooms:

Guests are accommodated in 12 individual cabin rooms overlooking the lake. They are furnished with king twin or double beds, ceiling fans, modern en-suite bathrooms, an elevated veranda and wonderful view of the lake. The main lodge building with a wraparound veranda houses a dining room, lounge, bar and reception. This veranda will be the place to enjoy exceptional sunsets over the water. All of the buildings have made use of local sago woven matting and timber providing a natural setting to fit with the location.
