Location:

Karawari Lodge is located in one of the most remote and unspoilt destinations in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. It is accessible only by small charter aircraft that arrives and departs from a private airstrip. A short walk from the airstrip to the river, a 20 minute jet boat ride and short transfer by car brings you to the Lodge. The awe inspiring view at dusk has to be experienced to be believed. Stilted villages line the edges of flooded waterways and dugout canoes are the primary mode of transportation. The people of the Sepik express their culture and beliefs through their art, inspiring the carving of incredible masks, drums, baskets and sculptures that integrate with their daily like and animist beliefs. Most importantly, it is an outstanding location for birds and butterflies. A staggering 229 different bird species have been recorded in the Karawari area, including the elusive 12-Wire Bird of Paradise, Cockatoos, Parrots, Hornbills, cormorants and other water birds.

Services:

Karawari Lodge arranges river excursions in 18-seat jet boats, both to the surrounding villages to visit traditional homes, ceremonial dances and celebrations and the lifestyle of the Sepik people and for Birding tours arranged from the lodge. Air charters are also arranged by Trans Niugini Tours to facilitate access to and from the lodge. Meals are served in the Main Lodge that also hosts the Puk Puk Bar and lounge. The Main Lodge was designed and built in the form of a traditional “haus tambaran” or spirit house. It holds a vast collection of Sepik artifacts, many of which are museum pieces. Artifacts are also made available for sale and shipping can be arranged. Meals are served at communal tables and menus are based on European style recipes. Fish from the river and sago are the main diet as the area is not suitable for gardening.

Guestrooms:

Guests are accommodated in ten separate cottages, each built out of local bush materials and inspired by local architecture. Each cottage has two private twin rooms, each with a modern ensuite bathrooms and a communal verandah. Despite its’ remoteness, the lodge has 220V electricity with Australian style power points, hot and cold water, comfortable mosquito-netted single beds and ceiling fan. As the power is supplied by generator, the power is turned off at approximately 10pm and on again by 6am. These times are flexible depending on the needs of our guests. Small LED lights are available in the rooms for use during the night. Filtered and boiled water are available in both the rooms and dining area. Bottled water, soft drinks, wine and beer are available for sale at the Puk Puk Bar. Tea and coffee are available any time.
