La Pajarona is situated in the picturesque village of Siruela, midway between Madrid and Seville, deep in the beautiful countryside of northern Extremadura, Spain. It is a century-old building that has preserved much of its traditional architecture while also modernising to provide elegant and comfortable rooms from which to explore the birds of the surrounding lands. In fact, much of the surrounding area, covering around 154,930 ha, is included in the Special Protection Area of La Serena y Sierras Periféricas, designated under the EU Birds Directive. Here, one can find, for example, Great and Little Bustards, Black Storks, Black and Griffon Vultures, Spanish Imperial, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles, Eagle Owl, Pin-tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Thekla and Calandra Larks, and White Storks and Lesser Kestrels in the village itself. It is only a short drive of 34 km to Puerto Peña, beside the Serena reservoir, where boat rides can be arranged on the River Guadiana.
